Bryson DeChambeau recently spoke about his decision to play the PGA Tour and LIV Golf Series exhibition match. The match will see DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka of LIV Golf go up against Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy of the PGA Tour.
While it was contemplated that the match was put into place in order to push for a quicker merger between the two series, DeChambeau has maintained that the match is simply for fun. Speaking about the decision to set up the match, DeChambeau said via Sports Illustrated:
“Look, I think all of us know we want to get this game back in good standing. We want to bring this game back to a place where I would say everyone has the opportunity to see the greatest play a lot more than four times a year. I think it's a great opportunity to showcase how we evolve that over the course of time. The details are not very fully flushed out yet.”
The upcoming exhibition tournament is expected to be an entertaining weekend for fans. DeChambeau further stated that the match was meant to give the people what they wanted.
“We always wanted to have a PGA Tour and LIV sort of battle a couple years ago,” he said. “We always thought that would be pretty cool and what not. But I think it's going to develop over the course of time and hopefully give the people what they want.”
The match will be held in December in Las Vegas and is expected to feature a Ryder Cup-style format.
Rory McIlroy speaks out about playing against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka- "We all thought it was a good idea"
Rory McIlroy also echoed Bryson DeChambeau's sentiments about the upcoming match, saying that it was an opportunity for fans to see what the future of golf might look like. He said (via Sports Illustrated):
“I think that's what we've tried to do. It's in the middle of December. There's not a lot going on in the game of golf. So trying to get people excited about something before the season starts again. I think we all thought it was a good idea and something that hopefully is a sign of things to come in the future.”
McIlroy also iterated that the match is not supposed to send a message to anyone regarding the status of the merger. He said that the match would prove to be entertaining considering how many Majors all of them have won, and their currently relevance in the world of golf. The match will be a TV Match-play showdown between the two sides.
