Can Rory McIlroy end his major drought at The Open Championship 2024? Odds explored

The Open Championship 2024 is set to tee off at 01:35 am ET on July 18, Thursday at the Old Course at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. The final major championship of the year will see 158 golfers compete for the prestigious Claret Jug and a $3,100,000 winner’s paycheck from the $17,000,000 prize purse. Rory McIlroy is one of the favorites to win.

World No.2 McIlroy comes into the Open Championship with +750 odds, according to CBS Sports. The Northern Irishman sat second on the odds list behind World No.1 Scottie Scheffler (45-1). The four-time major champion is followed by Xander Schauffele (+1100), Ludvig Aberg (+1400) and Collin Morikawa (+1400) on the event’s odds list.

McIlroy comes into the major on the back of another major defeat. The golfer, who won his last major championship trophy in 2014, came close to ending his 10-year-long winless drought at the US Open last month.

However, he fell short of Bryson DeChambeau. The LIV Golfer follows the PGA Tour star once again on the odds list with +1400 odds.

It is pertinent to note that McIlroy has had a mixed bag of results so far this year. Having started 2024 with a win at DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic, the Irishman finished T66 at his PGA Tour schedule debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The 2014 Open Championship winner finished T22 at the Masters, before winning the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship. He recorded a T12 at the PGA Championship and solo second at the US Open.

Coming off a solid T4 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open, the ace golfer will be eyeing to end his major drought this weekend. McIlroy will tee off alongside Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton at 05:09 am ET.
