Charlie Woods is currently competing at the 2024 US Junior Amateur. The 76th edition of the tournament is being played at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, from July 22 to 27, 2024.
Charlie had a disastrous round as he scored 12-over 82 in the first round of the tournament. On the front nine, he scored a birdie on par-5 5th. He scored two bogeys on the 6th and 8th holes and two double bogeys on the 4th and 9th holes. His score was 5-over 40 in the first nine holes.
Things only got worse for Charlie Woods in the second round. He scored one birdie on par-5 5th, two bogeys on the 13th and 15th holes, and three double bogeys on the 11th, 14th and 17th holes. He finished tied at 242nd in a field of 264 golfers.
Tiger Woods was watching his son Charlie from afar. He reached Oakland Hills after missing the cut at Royal Troon last week. One of the viewers, John Pinch of Warren, Michigan, said (via The Week):
"I feel like he's feeling pressure. If his dad (Tiger Woods) could talk to him, he would probably try to get him to settle down. You can tell he's really down on himself."
Charlie Woods seemed frustrated after hitting several bad shots. He could be seen slamming and swinging his clubs, shaking his head in frustration. However, Tiger couldn't help Charlie as rules bar parents from coaching during the tournament.
Can Charlie Woods still qualify for the match play after 36 holes?
The top 64 players will qualify for the match play after two rounds at the Oakland Hills. Charlie Woods is currently placed tied at 242nd with a score of -12. He needs a massive turnaround and needs to shoot in the low 60s to reach the top 64.
Charlie Woods will tee off at 1:48 PM EDT on Tuesday, July 23, with Chase Kyes and Davis Ovard. Ovard scored 3-over par and is tied for 81st position while Keys scored an even par 70 and is tied for 28th.
After the first round, Keys, who is an Alabama high school senior, was asked about the experience of playing with Charlie. He said (via PGA Tour):
"I tried to just do my own thing. I looked over at (Tiger) a couple of times, but I tried not to look that much. There's a lot of pressure with his name."
He further said:
"I loved it. If you're playing in a different group and you hit a good shot, your dad is clapping. You hit a good shot in this group, and you’ve got 400 people clapping."
