Fans on social media have reacted to the WM Phoenix Open's zero-tolerance policy for the 'unruly behavior' of the crowd at the event. In the 2024 edition of the tournament, the event experienced an unexpected hindrance because of heavy rain, muddy grass, and also unruly behavior from the fans towards the PGA Tour.

There were several incidents involving fans drinking too much and causing disruptions during the 2024 event. This week, officials announced new changes to avoid such issues next year by implementing a "zero-tolerance" policy.

On Friday, December 6, Nuclr Golf shared the news about the same on its X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:

"Waste Management Phoenix Open to implement ‘zero tolerance’ policy for unruly behaviour at the 2025 tournament. Fans will be required to acknowledge a code of conduct with their ticket purchase. The move comes after a slew of drunken viral moments occurred last year. (via USA TODAY)"

Fans jumped to the comments section to share their opinions about the same and criticized the last edition WM Phoenix Open:

"Last year was ridiculous. I’m not going this year," a fan wrote.
"Hate to see it," another fan jotted.

Meanwhile, another fan was critical of people drinking at the event.

"Why do we have to be drunk to enjoy a sporting event?" a fan commented.

"I thought that was the point of that tournament. No wonder LIV is pulling ahead. I mean, I don't want loud music blasted on the 12th tee at Augusta, but letting a tournament have a personality isn't a bad idea," another fan said.

WM Phoenix Open director comments on the new changes

Recently, the WM Phoenix Open director for the 2025 edition, Matt Mooney, opened up about the new changes for the event and brushed on the 'zero-tolerance policy'. He said (via Golf Week):

"Our general admission fans will have to click on a code of conduct acknowledgment and we’re going to have a zero-tolerance policy for people that cross those procedures. Unfortunately, there’s a small segment of our society that wants to create these viral moments and it’s to the detriment of the event, the detriment of the other fans and most importantly the athletes themselves."

He further highlighted the high security that would be there next year, saying:

“We always have a heavy PD [police department] presence, they’re going to be very visible this year, and if fans cross that line they will get removed from the golf tournament.”

The WM Phoenix Open is a regular PGA Tour event, which usually takes place in February. This year, Nick Taylor, who was the runner-up in 2023, defeated Charley Hoffman in a playoff to win the event.
