Months after defecting to the LIV Golf, Thomas Pieters has now come out to claim that he was “lonely” on the PGA Tour. He claimed that he “got very homesick.” The 31-year-old golfer’s comment came in response to the backlash he received for joining the controversial series.

Pieters, who has six wins on the DP World Tour, was a certain pick for the European Ryder Cup side. However, the golfer lost credit for joining the team after he jumped ship to join LIV.

The Belgian golfer also received flak for his move. Justifying his decision, he has now stated that he “did not like” his time on the American circuit. Speaking on Barstool's Fore Play podcast, Thomas Pieters said:

"Obviously there's a lot of talk, but at the end of the day, it's a personal opinion, and it's just golf, it's not life and death. As a kid you obviously dream about playing on the PGA Tour, winning golf tournaments. I played a year on the PGA Tour. I did not like it.
I got very homesick, very lonely, so for me that was kind of like tick the box, I tried it over there, wasn't my thing and then LIV came around right at the right time.”

Furthermore, the DP World Tour star added that he is currently enjoying his time at LIV Golf. He said that he went out for dinner with his LIV teammates, which players never did on the PGA Tour.

Pieters added:

“Everybody who was playing on it last year that I talked to said it was very exciting, new and that was something that really spoke to me… Last week we went out to dinner a couple nights (with team-mates Harold Varner III and Talor Gooch), for me that's normal. It's funny because Harold said, 'man we never did this on the PGA Tour,' and I find that a little bit sad."

Thomas Pieters is happy with the financial gains from LIV

Thomas Pieters made the jump to LIV Golf after its first season. Since joining, the golfer has already earned over $240,000. He finished 32nd in Mexico and 33rd place at Tucson.

Addressing the same, the Belgian stated that the league was “amazing” financially. He said:

"You can't lie about it financially, it's amazing, and it was something as a family, father of two daughters, as well with my girlfriend, it's awesome to have such good schedule, as well. I think the PIF is in about 150 boards if I'm not wrong, so anything you touch on a daily basis is funded by Saudi money, so I think it's a bit hypocritical, some of the things that are being said.”

Interestingly, Pieters said that the alleged human rights abuse cases against Saudi Arabia were “horrible.” However, he further added that he was in the rebel league playing golf and didn’t want to get into the political side of things.
