After finishing as a runner-up at the Amgen Irish Open, Rory McIlroy will be seen competing this week in the BMW PGA Championship. The tournament will begin from Thursday, September 19, till Sunday, September 22 at Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water, Surrey.
Mcllroy is currently leading the Race to Dubai standings with 3,791 points. Rasmus Hojgaard is positioned second with 2,250 points. In the pre-tournament press conference before the 2024 BMW PGA Championship, McIlroy was asked about his 'nasty cough' and how he felt physically. He said he was on medication (via ASAP Sports):
"I'm okay. I feel a bit better than I was yesterday. Poppy's had a cough for a couple weeks. Gave it to me last week. Started feeling pretty rough Monday, Tuesday. So went to the Doctor, on a course of antibiotics and I feel, energy-wise, I feel better than I did yesterday. But yeah, I'll be a bit wheezy this week but nothing I can't handle. I'm fine."
Mcllroy lost the 2024 Amgen Irish Open last week to Hojgaard as the latter won by one stroke over World No. 3. Mcllroy was on the top of the leaderboard after the third round. However, a splendid 6-under 65 in the final round by the Danish player gave him the edge.
Mcllroy was asked about the 'tough loss' at the tournament. He said:
"I think there may be a misconception that it hit me harder than it maybe did. You know, I didn't really feel like I necessarily lost the tournament. I felt like Rasmus went out and won it. Shot 31 on the back nine."
Mcllroy carded 2-under 69 in the final round and missed several opportunities. He acknowledged his shortcomings in the round and said:
"So yeah, I shouldn't have missed the green right on 15 and misjudged the first putt on 17. But I mean, looking back on Sunday and the support of the crowds and that scene on 18 and everything, it was amazing to be a part of."
Rory McIlroy will tee off with Justin Rose and Ryan Fox at 3:40 a.m. ET on Thursday at the 2024 BMW PGA Championship.
