Recapping Xander Schauffele's victory at the PGA Championship
Xander Scuaffele carded his record round of 62 during the first day of the 2024 PGA Championship. Schauffele carded nine birdies with no bogeys, a performance that was matched two days later by Shane Lowry.
Xander Schauffele started the second round in first place, a position he did not lose throughout the tournament. On Friday, he had four birdies and one bogey for a score of 68. At the time, his main contenders were Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala.
During the so-called "Moving Day," Xander Schauffele repeated his score of 68, with five birdies and a double bogey. Morikawa and Theegala remained in contention and were joined by Bryson DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland and Shane Lowry.
The fourth round saw a fierce battle for first place. Theegala, Morikawa and Lowry did not have good performances and fell back in the leaderboard, but DeChambeau, Hovland and Schauffele were head to head almost until the end.
In the final holes, it was Schauffele and DeChambeau who were left to compete for the title. DeChambeau finished first and shot the best score of the fourth round (64, tied with two other players) to finish in first place, waiting for what his rival could do.
Schauffele needed a birdie on the 18th to win the PGA Championship without going to playoff. His tee shot ended up in the left fairway, on the slope of a bunker, so he had to execute his second shot almost with a baseball swing. He executed it admirably and managed to get his ball into the fairway.
With the third shot of the hole, Schauffele chipped the ball to the green, leaving it just six feet from the pin. He successfully executed his birdie putt to take a one-stroke lead over DeChambeau and win his first major.
