"It was a great swing" - Rory McIlroy wins a match against Denny McCarthy at WGC-Dell Match Play with an epic drive

Rory McIlroy registered an incredible win against Danny McCarthy at the 2023 WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.

McIlroy is unarguably one of the greatest players of all time. However, shockingly, he missed the cut at The Players Championship, which was very disappointing. Nonetheless, the former World No. 1 returned with a phenomenal win at Austin Country Club Golf course on Thursday, March 23.

He hit one of the best drives in golf history to take a 1-up lead over McCarthy. McIlroy struggled with the game in the last few tournaments due to a change in his driver that he again switched to at Match Play and fortunately it was worth it.

He smashed his driver with a terrific ball speed of 188 mph, which resulted in him landing just 3 feet 9 inches away from the hole. It was an incredible shot and arguably the best of all time, without any exaggeration.

It is important to note that he won his first match of the event on Wednesday, March 22.

The Northern Irish golfer spoke about his new driver in an interview with the media and said, as quoted by Golf Channel:

"Yeah, it’s- I feel like I took it out of the box on Friday last week and the first two shots with it I was like, here we go. That’s what it should be. When you’re trying to fit clubs and stuff, I don’t think there should be too much fiddling about with it. It was like first two shots out of the box, and it was like, yeah, I think I’ve got one here. So it’s nice to sort of see that feeling translate into the same thing on the golf course.”

He added:

“I was 1-up and there’s certainly a lot of other ways to make birdie on that hole without having to do that. But, yeah, it was a great swing and it was a great time to do it.”
