Brooks Koepka is one of the most popular names in golf today, so much so that several couples have named their babies after him. The golfer also revealed that he was named after his father's best friend.
On Friday, August 16, Koepka fired a 6-under 64 in the opening round of the LIV Golf Greenbrier, finishing just one shot back after Day 1. He played error-free on the first day at the Old White Course, making six birdies.
Following the first round, a journalist asked Koepka for his reaction to parents naming their babies after him.
"Yeah, it's crazy," Koepka replied. "Over the last couple years I've heard it a lot. Obviously it's pretty cool that somebody would have a kid and think about naming it after me."
The five-time major champion also revealed the story behind his name.
"Yeah, it's wild," he continued. "My dad named me after his best friend and then Brooks Robinson, so everybody has somebody that they, I guess, idolize, they love the name. It's cool, I love it. It's a unique name. I think it's awesome that a bunch of little kids are going to be running around named Brooks."
"I think a couple years ago, somehow I got a big group of people just started messaging me and there's a big group on Instagram where it's all these people named Brooks and they all follow or they're all chatting, and it's quite interesting. I respond every once in a while. But it's quite funny," he added.
When will Brooks Koepka tee off at the LIV Golf Greenbrier, Round 2?
Brooks Koepka is grouped with Matt Jones and Jon Rahm for the second round of the LIV Golf Greenbrier. The trio will tee off from the seventh hole on Saturday, August 17, at 11:15 a.m. ET in a shotgun start.
Brooks Koepka is tied for 4th alongside Jones, Rahm, and Richard Bland after the first round. He won LIV Golf Singapore earlier this year, claiming his fourth win on the circuit. However, he has struggled in the major championships this year and has also fallen behind in the race for the individual championship.
"This year has been actually very disappointing," Brooks Koepka said while reflecting on his season. "I haven't played anywhere what I want to play. Played absolutely horrible in all the majors and only won once out here, so that's not anywhere where I want it."
Following the opening round, Talor Gooch, Jason Kokrak, and Sebastián Muñoz hold a one-shot lead.
