Joost Luiten can’t play in the 2024 Olympics for a bizarre reason, despite winning court case against Netherlands officials

The 2024 Olympics is set to be held in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, and the Netherlands team has been running into trouble seeking permission to play in the prestigious event. A few weeks ago, the Dutch government and the country's Olympic federation denied four players from featuring in the Summer Games after claiming their medal chances do not warrant participation.

Dewi Weber, Darius van Driel, Anne van Dam and Joost Luiten were the four players excluded from participating by the Dutch government. However, Luiten challenged the case in court and emerged victorious.

Despite the judge ruling in Joost Luiten's favor, the star will not be permitted to represent the Netherlands at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The International Golf Federation, which sided with the Dutch players and advocated for them, has now denied Joost Luiten the opportunity to play. The International Golf Federation said:

"When the IGF received notification of Joost Luiten's court ruling in the Netherlands and his entry from the Netherlands’ National Olympic Committee (NOC*NSF), his unused quota spot had already been reallocated pursuant to the IGF’s published qualification procedures. The IGF was not a party to the legal action brought forth by Luiten in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, in an effort to support Luiten, the IGF sought an exception from the IOC to increase the field size of the men's Olympic golf competition from 60 to 61 competitors to include Luiten, however the request was denied by the IOC today. The IGF has advised Luiten of the IOC's decision, and he has not informed the IGF whether he intends to pursue this matter further.”

About the author

Lathika is one of the newer additions to Sportskeeda’s budding golf journalism team and has brought plenty of in-game experience to the role. Having been a golfer for over 12 years now, some of her crowning achievements include winning titles on the Indian Golf Union Ladies tour and Junior Girls Amateur tour.

She currently competes in Division 1 golf in New York, and hopes to play in the U.S. Open and Chevron Championship one day. She is set to cover the 2025 Ryder Cup as well. She is currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration and Management, and holds a Sports Marketing certification from Northwestern University, which helped her learn to draft press releases and ultimately transition into journalism.

Lathika has thus developed a knowledge base that allows her to view golf from both player, spectator and media lenses, enabling her to bring statistics, insights and an understanding of fan emotion together in her copies. She only uses verified information from reliable sources like the PGA TOUR.

Her favorite golfers are Nelly Korda and Tiger Woods, both for their playing style as well as their mental strength. Much of her time away from work is spent playing golf, but she also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and learning new hobbies or upskilling.
