"Just go 3-0 and that’ll do the job" - Xander Schauffele hopeful of a good showing at 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

THE PLAYERS Championship - Round Two
Xander Schauffele beat Cam Davis in the opening round of WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

Xander Schauffele wasn't overexcited after his impressive win against Cam Davis in the WGC-Dell Technologies gameplay on Wednesday. He knows he will have to do well in the next two games given how tough the group is. He will next face Tom Hoge and Aaron Wise, which is not going to be an easy road for the World No. 7.

Schauffele has never reached the knockout stage of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play despite playing some good golf, and this is what is making him extra careful.

“There’s been plenty of times where you go 2-1 and you don’t get out because somebody goes 3-0,” Schauffele told PGA Tour. “If you want to get out of your group, just go 3-0 and that’ll do the job. That’s kind of what we have in mind.”

He admitted that he never came to Austin Country Club in good form in past editions.

“The one time I played really well I think Sergio (Garcia) was like 9 under through 16 or something and I was 6under,” he said. “I was playing well and he beat me straight up. It’s one of those things where you can match up against someone, shoot 1 over and win your match, or you can shoot 7 under and lose your match.
“That’s just the beauty of match play and the beauty of all these players being the top players in the world, and it’s also this golf course. Anyone can birdie any hole on any given day, so it makes it pretty exciting.”

Schauffele to face Aaron Wise at WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Day 2

Xander Schauffele will be hoping to continue his good form on the second day as well. Schauffele holed five of the first seven holes to move to a 4-and-3 victory over Cam Davis. He hit 10 of the 12 fairways and was one of the longest players off the tee on Wednesday.

The World No. 7 will next face Aaron Wise in his second game of the group stage. The match is scheduled to tee off at 3:06 pm ET on Thursday.
