Justin Thomas picked Rory McIlroy over Tiger Woods and other golfers in one of the golf skills. The two-time Major winner will be playing this week at the 2025 US Open.
Justin Thomas attended the pre-tournament press conference of the Major on June 9. A reporter asked him if he envisions "one of the very longest hitters not having to hit too many" in the sport. In response, the American picked Rory McIlroy and talked about his game, saying (via ASAP Sports):
"Potentially. You look at someone like Rory McIlroy, you drive it like he does, I would pull that driver out as often as I can. He hits it further and straighter than maybe anybody that's played the game. It's hard to argue why he wouldn't hit driver as often as he could. It truly is dependent on the player and their strategy."
Rory McIlroy will also tee off this week at the US Open 2025; however, Tiger Woods will miss the Major. The American golfer has been focused on his recovery from a surgery he had in March 2025, and despite being eligible to play in the Major, he will not tee off this week.
Tiger Woods has also missed the first two majors, The Masters and the PGA Championship, due to surgery.
Justin Thomas sets his sights on winning the US Open 2025
Justin Thomas has had a good season on the PGA Tour in 2025 so far and even had one victory this season, along with three runner-up finishes. He has his eyes on winning the Major this week.
In the pre-tournament press conference, Thomas talked about the US Open and said (via ASAP Sports):
"Of course I wanted to win, but it's just like I'm doing the best that I can out here. I'm not like, if I have a birdie opportunity, I'm going to try to make birdie because I want to make birdie, not because I need to to try to win this tournament. Just getting into that more so would be better."
He also talked about his impressive performance this season, saying:
"I'm getting better at letting myself get into contention, better at -- I feel like I was letting myself last year, but then come Saturday, Sunday, I was forcing it and trying to win the tournament versus just playing and trusting and believing."
Thomas has won two majors so far in his career, both coming at the PGA Championship. He won it in 2017 and then again in 2022. He is still seeking to win his maiden US Open. His best at the US Open is a T8 position, which he recorded in 2020.
Justin Thomas has a good chance this week to win the third Major of his career. Per CBS Sports, his odds for the US Open 2025 are +4000.
