At the men’s major championship at Pinehurst earlier this year, McIlroy had been in contention to win the title but faltered on the final holes resulting in him finishing second, just one stroke behind Bryson DeChambeau. As they both are playing together this week, the four-time major winner talked about the major and said:

What Went Wrong for Rory McIlroy at the 2024 U.S. Open?

The 2024 U.S. Open was a rollercoaster ride for Rory McIlroy, who came agonizingly close to breaking his decade-long winless streak at major championships. After the third round, McIlroy was in second place while DeChambeau held the lead.

In the final round, the American golfer shot a bogey with no birdies on the front nine, while McIlroy carded two birdies and one bogey. The World No. 3 then shot three birdies on the back nine, taking the lead in the championship.

However, the momentum shifted on the final four holes. Both McIlroy and DeChambeau bogeyed the 15th hole, but McIlroy remained in the lead. Unfortunately, he struggled on the closing holes while DeChambeau held his nerve and carded pars.

McIlroy bogeyed the 16th hole, which tied him with DeChambeau for the lead. Then, on the 18th hole, McIlroy made another costly bogey, finishing just one shot behind the LIV golfer. With that, DeChambeau secured his second major title, and McIlroy was left with yet another close call.
