For the second year in a row, the Presidents Cup will not feature anyone from LIV Golf. The newest set of qualifications was released recently, and it makes a clear stipulation that does not allow anyone on the rebel tour to participate. This is not the first time they've been left out.
LIV Golf has a bit of a contentious relationship with the rest of golf. Thus far, they had not been ignored for Majors and the Ryder Cup, but the Presidents Cup has shut the door.
One of the key stipulations for anyone to qualify or be selected for the event is to play in 15 Tour-sanctioned events that have OWGR points. OWGR points are exclusive to major tournaments and to PGA Tour-sanctioned events, so LIV players cannot possibly qualify.
They recently tried to get OWGR points and were denied, which may have sealed their fate when it comes to the Presidents Cup. There is currently no way for any of them to even be considered.
LIV Golf left out of Presidents Cup again
This means that Brooks Koepka -- the lone player from LIV to make it to the Ryder Cup -- Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and others cannot be named to the semi-annual tournament set to take place in 2024.
The merger could change things, but that is currently unclear. The future is murky on that front as very little clarity exists on the whole situation.
International captain Mike Weir said this about it via Golf Monthly:
"I am anxious and hopeful that we hear something sooner rather than later. Hopefully by the end of the year so I can formulate some things in my head of potential guys that can make the team."
"I really can't say until it is all finalised but if it is finalised, yes, I will definitely take a look at it and take a look at those guys. I will probably be having some conversations with them and hopefully their interest is high to play in it if that is a possibility," he added.
He went on to say that he had an eye on some players, naming Cameron Smith in particular. As of now, none of them will be able to make it. This may or may not change with the merger.
