Padraig Harrington among World Golf Hall of Fame 2024’s top finalists

Padraig Harrington is among the top finalists for the World Golf Hall of Fame 2024 induction class. On Wednesday, February 22, the WGHOF released a list of 12 members for the 2024 induction class, including seven of the remaining LPGA Tour founding members. The final selection will be announced on March 6.

The 12 finalists include Tom Weiskopf, Dottie Pepper, Cristie Kerr, Sandra Palmer, Johnny Farrell, Jim Furyk, Beverly Hanson, Jay Sigel, Butch Harmon, and Peter Dawson, along with Padraig Harrington.

Announcing the names, the CEO of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Greg McLaughlin, said:

"The nominating committee has selected finalists who represent the highest caliber of competitors and contributors. Congratulations to all who have been nominated for this special recognition."

The World Golf Hall of Fame also included the names of seven LPGA Tour co-founding members, including Alice Bauer, Bettye Danoff, Helen Detweiler, Helen Hicks, Opal Hill, Shirley Spork, and Sally Sessions.


The early and professional life of Padraig Harrington

Padraig Harrington was born on August 31, 1971 in Dublin, Ireland, to Patrick and Breda Harrington. He is the youngest of five siblings.

Although he was born in Dublin, Padraig grew up in Rathfarnham, the birthplace of two renowned golfers, Paul McGinley and Peter Lawrie.

Harrington developed an interest in the game of golf during his school days when his father and brother encouraged him to join the Stackstown GC.

As his interest in the game deepened, Harrington decided to pursue a career in it. He had a successful amateur career.

Padraig Harrington won the Walker Cup while playing for the Great Britain and Ireland team in 1993. A year later, he turned professional.

Harrington turned professional relatively late as during his amateur career he was doubting his skills and was unsure whether to follow golf in the future. Nonetheless, he started gaining confidence after winning his first tournament at the 1996 Peugeot Spanish Open.

Padraig Harrington has had a remarkable career year playing on the European Tour. He finished second in several tournaments and also qualified for the Ryder Cup. He made his Ryder Cup debut in 1999.

Harrington also competed in the tournament outside the European Open and won the Irish PGA Championship in 1997.

The Dublin-born golfer has 36 professional victories to his name. He reached No. 3 in the world rankings and won six PGA Tour titles.

Padraig Harrington registered victory on 15 of the European Tours and won three major tournaments in his career, including the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.

It is important to note that Harrington has played in six of the Ryder Cups and captained the team in 2020.

He currently plays in the senior golf tournament and competed in The Tradition in 2022 where he finished in second position. He won the 2022 US Senior Open after beating Steve Stricker by one stroke. It was his first senior major title.

Following his years of hard work and undeniable impact on golf, Padraig Harrington is included in the list of the 2024 World Golf Hall of Fame induction classes.
