With his victory at the 2024 Procore Championship, Patton Kizzire leaped more than 150 spots in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), surpassing LIV golfer Joaquin Niemann. Over the last week, both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf held events.
On the LIV circuit, Jon Rahm won the Chicago event while Niemann finished in second place. Kizzire, meanwhile, competed in the PGA Tour event, and secured a five-stroke victory over David Lipsky. As a result of the triumph, the American golfer made a significant jump in the world rankings.
He was ranked 257th before the tournament, and after winning the Procore Championship, he gained 36.45946 points, propelling him to 99th in the OWGR, climbing 158 spots.
Meanwhile, as the players at the LIV Golf event in Chicago did not earn any OWGR points, their rankings slipped following the Procore Championship. With his second-place finish at the LIV Golf Chicago event, Joaquin Niemann dropped eight spots in the OWGR, settling at 118th. He was ranked 110th before the tournament.
The winner of the Chicago event, Jon Rahm, also saw his OWGR rank drop despite his victory. The Spanish golfer was ranked 14th last week, but after winning LIV Golf Chicago, he is currently ranked 15th.
Notably, LIV Golf events do not award any OWGR points. The players fought a legal battle to gain points but were denied the opportunity to record points from the LIV Golf tour in the OWGR rankings.
In October 2023, OWGR Board of Directors chairman Peter Dawson gave his take on the question of LIV Golf's ranking points, in an interview with the Associated Press.
Dawson said:
"We are not at war with them. This decision not to make them eligible is not political. It is entirely technical. LIV players are self-evidently good enough to be ranked. They’re just not playing in a format where they can be ranked equitably with the other 24 tours and thousands of players to compete on them."
Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler leads the world rankings, followed by Xander Schauffele in second place. Bryson DeChambeau is the only LIV golfer ranked within the top 10 in the OWGR.
Joaquin Niemann earns more with runner-up finish at LIV Golf than Patton Kizzire's PGA Tour victory
Joaquin Niemann finished in second place at the LIV Golf Chicago event, tying with Sergio Garcia, and earned $1,875,000 in prize money. The LIV Golf event had a purse of $20 million for the individual competition, with the winner taking home a hefty $4 million.
On the other hand, the Procore Championship was a regular PGA Tour event with a purse of $6 million. Patton Kizzire won the event and was awarded $1,080,000 in prize money.
This marked Kizzire’s third PGA Tour victory and his first since 2018. With this win, his total official earnings on the PGA Tour reached $13.5 million, according to Golf Week.
David Lipsky finished second at the PGA Tour event, earning $654,000, followed by Patrick Fishburn, who took home $414,000 for his solo third-place finish.
