Phil Mickelson shares his one secret to perfect chipping

Phil Mickelson ended the 2024 LIV Golf season in 46th place with 12.21 points. With a scrambling percentage of 50.99 this year, the HyFlyers GC captain has shared his secret to perfect chipping.

Mickelson has been extremely skilled with his wedges inside of 100 yards throughout his 32 years playing as a professional. The 54-year-old posted a video to his X account with over 852.9 thousand followers sharing the key to cutting strokes around the green.

"Let’s put personal feelings a side for a moment and prioritize improving your short game," Phil Mickelson wrote on X.

He started off the video by stating that everyone's short game "needs some help" and went into his three key factors for good chipping. First, is having your weight primarily be on the leading leg to ensure that the leading edge of the clubface is as close to the ground as possible.

To facilitate the leading edge striking the ball first, Mickelson expresses the importance of having your hands ahead of the body throughout the swing. This move ensures that you do not pick up the club in your takeaway.

The last important factor would be the ball position. When the ball is closer to the leading foot, it will result in a higher ball flight. Playing the ball back in the stance will see a lower launch.

Mickelson went on to compare a chip shot to a full swing. He stresses the importance of turning your shoulders in the takeaway to get the club on a good path. This move also ensures that you go through the ball well by avoiding a steep attack angle.

The 2013 Open Championship winner shared that his trigger for staring his swing with a chip shot is to begin by turning his shoulders.

"What this does is decreases the hand action and increases the feel in the hands, which is what we want," Phil Mickelson explained.
