Rory McIlroy announces participation in 2023 BMW PGA championship

THE PLAYERS Championship - Round One
Rory McIlroy is back in the PGA Championship

Coming off a slightly disappointing run at the Players Championship, Rory McIlroy has confirmed his participation in an official major, the PGA Championship. McIlroy won the event in 2014, which was the last year he won a major at all.

McIlroy said via Sky Sports:

"I always love playing at the BMW PGA Championship, and I've had some great results and performances round the West Course in the past. I started 2023 with a win in Dubai, and Wentworth is a place where I would like to add another title."

Meanwhile, Shane Lowry will also return. Lowry is the defending champion after topping McIlroy by a single stroke in the 2022 event. Lowry said:

"As I said last year, the BMW PGA Championship is a tournament that I love, and it was right at the top of the list of events that I wanted to win."

Will McIlroy be able to break his long spell of not winning majors?

Rory McIlroy is a big fan of HBO's Succession

Rory McIlroy is one of the best golfers in the world, and he's poised to continue atop the OWGR leaderboard as he jockeys with Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm. However, he's also like most of the world: a fan of the hit HBO show Succession.

McIlroy said via Golf.com:

“I think people have really heard enough of me talk golf the last couple years, so I was all in on this. And as a pretty late starter to watching Succession, it’s pretty fresh in my mind.”

McIlroy admitted that the show hit kind of close to home for him:

“Now that I’m a father and I’ve got a daughter that’s going to grow up in a lot of money, it’s like, how do we not f*** her up? You see these children, and it’s like, oh my gosh, it’s not just Succession, obviously this is a bigger theme around the world.
"You want to give your kids enough to be able to help them on their way, but you get into this sort of stuff, and y’know, hopefully she’s not going to have any sort of power struggle over whatever, I don’t think I’ll have a Waystar Royco sort of company, but still."

McIlroy finished, saying:

"It gets me thinking, like, Jeez, whenever kids grow up in this environment with these things — they grow up around kids that have similar things, it’s like, they must just become so numb to it. So in my mind it just gets me thinking, 'Gee, I have this little daughter who’s three years old, how do I make sure she’s not as f****d up as these kids?'"

Succession is known for being a hilarious comedy and has won awards. It's a comedic look at things, but it holds a lot of real-world connections, at least for Rory McIlroy.

While he's perhaps not the same kind of rich person that the show depicts, he still has concerns for his own children.
