Scottie Scheffler, the betting favorite at the 2025 US Open, has been off to a poor start. He struggled to a +3 scoreline on Thursday, June 12, and his Round 2 performance hasn't quite reversed that trend. Early on, fans online reacted to his display at Oakmont with a few comparing him with Rory McIlroy.

One of Scheffler's early tee shots did not go as the world number one had hoped, and he reacted like it. He popped his club on the ground and let out a cry of frustration.

At the time, Scheffler was in 45th place, so any more struggles would have only pushed him further out of contention. Golf fans online reacted to Scheffler's mishit with comments on the above X post.

"Rory McIlroy like performance," one fan compared.

"Two straight days of anger, that’s Oakmont for you," one said.
"Watch your mouth, Scottie!" One fan replied.

"He's smashing the club again," one chimed in.
"Giving me Kirk Cousin vibes," another one laughed.
"Weak club slam," one added.

Scheffler is currently tied for 70th, so he has not only gotten worse in round two, but he's in danger of missing the cut. Only the top 60 make it at the US Open, so a two-over scoreline through 12 holes is not going to cut it.

The favorites have all struggled so far at challenging Oakmont Country Club. Bryson DeChambeau, the second betting favorite, is three-over par and yet to tee off on Friday. Rory McIlroy is also having a difficult time with four-over par score.

Scheffler said he has to give himself more chances, adding via the AP:

“When you’re playing these types of tests that are this challenging, there’s usually still a way to score."

Before round two, he added:

“I’ll clean up some of those mistakes, a couple three putts and stuff like that. And I think tomorrow will be a better day.”

So far, Friday has been a better day for the three-time major winner overall. He's only two over, whereas on Thursday he shot a three-over 73. However, he has six holes left to potentially do worse. Before the tournament, Scottie Scheffler knew it might be a struggle. The world number one had said via Bleacher Report:

"This is probably the hardest golf course that we'll play. Maybe ever."

He added that it's so much harder than Augusta National, a challenging course where Scheffler has won twice. He said,

"When you miss the green at the Masters, the ball runs away and it goes into these areas, and you can play a bump, you can play a flop. There's different options. Here, when you hit the ball over the green, you just get in some heavy rough, and it's like, 'Let me see how I can pop the ball out of this rough and somehow give myself a look.'"

Currently, Data Golf gives Scottie Scheffler a 76.4% chance to make the cut, but that could dwindle with more struggles down the road in Round 2.
