Jordan Spieth was recently 'saved' from missing the cut at the Players Championship as his shot hit the fan and returned to the fairway. Spieth thanked the fan by saying he would find his information and would gift him whatever he wanted.
Now, the former No. 1's shot off the tee hit another fan cracking his phone screen at the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay on Thursday. It happened on the par 3 7th hole of the Austin Country Club, where Spieth's shot ball returned to play (once again) after hitting that boy's phone and he settled for par with a 30-foot putt.
In a recent post made on the PGA Tour's Twitter handle, the fan described how it was the moment he got hit by Spieth's shot. He told the PGA Tour:
"We're sitting on the seventh hole, behind the green. I'm watching Jordan tee off, excited to see him play. His ball reaches a speed of 134 MPH. As he swings, everyone says "hey, it's coming long." This is a marquee match, live on TV. Next thing I know, it feels like somebody's dead-legging me in the leg. I look down and see Jordan's ball trickling down. "Oh crap, man, that hit my phone." I pull it out of my pocket and sure enough, it's shattered.
"Jordan walks up before he chips on the green and says, "Hey man, did that hit you? I'm so sorry." I reply, "Yeah man, it actually hit my phone." He then says, "Hey, we're going to get in contact after the round, is that cool?" It was pretty surreal seeing Jordan and getting to talk to him. I said, "Hey, don't worry about it. Just get up-and-down." He ended up making his 30-foot putt."
It seems like Spieth is on a 'hitting fan' spree.
PGA Tour rookie Taylor Montgomery beats Jordan Spieth at the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay
Jordan Spieth started well with a win on Wednesday but lost to Taylor Montgomery in Thursday’s second round at Austin Country Club.
Jordan didn't play badly as the match was quite close. It also saw him once again hitting the fan and then making a 30-foot par putt on the seventh hole. Montogomery holed birdies on the 8th and 10th while the former No. 1 birdied the 9th and 12th holes to gain the lead. However, his next two holes went for a bogey, thus losing the lead to Montgomery.
Montgomery won his third straight hole with a birdie on the 15th. He, on the next hole, posted a bogey, but a birdie on the 17th sealed the deal in his favor. The PGA Tour rookie beat the former FedExCup champ and the three-time major winner by 2-and-1.
Out of 14 starts this season, Montgomery has 8 top 25 finishes, including four top 10s. He currently stands 18th in the FedExCup.
The 28-year-old will now face Mackenzie Hughes on Friday looking to secure his place in the knockout round.
