"They took my watch and my wallet” - Tyrrell Hatton reveals a gun was ‘pushed against his chest’ in an armed robbery

Tyrrell Hatton was once robbed at gunpoint. Hatton recently recalled how he faced a horrifying robbery incident in 2015 during a golf tournament in South Africa.

It happened when he was returning to his hotel after stopping by the shopping center during the 2015 Johannesburg Open. He encountered two armed robbers and one of them had a gun pushed into his chest. All this happened when he was just 23 years old.

The World No. 17 told Daily Mail:

"Two guys get out and suddenly there is a gun pointed at the driver. I was on my phone at the time and my first reaction was to slide it under my lap so they wouldn't see it."

One of the robbers pointed the gun at Hatton's manager and the other one pushed a gun towards his chest. He added that he had no idea if the gun was even real, but he didn't want to take the risk of confirming it.

"They took my watch and my wallet but all I had was 80 rand, which was about £4 at the time," Hatton told Daily Mail. "My manager had done a bit of shopping in the mall and they took that, his wallet, phone, watch. I was hiding my phone, so I was lucky to just lose the watch, but yeah, that was a different kind of experience."

What's next for Tyrrell Hatton?

Tyrrell Hatton is currently playing in the Valero Texas Open, which is taking place at TPC San Antonio, Texas. During the match suspension on the first day, Hatton stood at T-15 as he scored 2-under after 10 holes.

The World No. 17 is so far bogey-free and has holed two birdies. He will play 26 holes on Friday. For Hatton and several other players, the Valero Texas Open is a preparation event for the upcoming Masters that will take place next week. Last year, he had a poor finish with a score of 79 and 80 in the last two days after making the cut comfortably.

Hatton knows he has struggled at Augusta National with his best performance being tied for 18th place in six starts.

He said,

"It's a place where I've struggled. I've played all right at courses that don't suit my eye, so there is no reason I couldn't have a great week. I'll go there again and like every other week will try my best."
