“This is an amazing story!” – PGA Tour pro Billy Horschel impressed by unlikely 39-year-old medalist honors winner at 2024 US Amateur

PGA Tour professional Billy Horschel is currently preparing for the FedEx St. Jude Championship which is set to begin on August 15th. However, preparations for the tournament have not distracted Horschel from acknowledging 39-year-old Jimmy Ellis' performance at the 2024 US Amateur.

Ellis, a landman, arrived at the 2024 US Amateur with a re-shafted gap wedge shaft that was a half-inch too long. While he subbed in a U-Wedge, he had to buy gloves and balls from the pro shop. Winning at 10-under, he is the first mid-am medalist in 11 years.

Horschel acknowledged the same on X (fka Twitter). He wrote:

"This is an amazing story! He’s going to have a lot of ppl pulling for him in match play."

Horschel's praise for Jimmy Elis does not come as a surprise. After all, Ellis is facing strong competition at the 2024 US Amateur. The tournament is featuring the likes of Gordon Sargent, Jackson Koivun and Luke Clanton.
