Tom Kim reportedly received a warning for damaging the locker room door after losing the playoff in the 2024 Genesis Championship at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea, Incheon, South Korea. According to the Korea JoongAng Daily, the committee meeting held on Wednesday decided to close the matter with just a warning without imposing any punishment.
Kim and Byeong Hun An were tied for the first spot after the regular 72-hole event. Both golfers carded -17 for the event as they headed into the playoffs. Hun An carded a birdie on the first playoff hole while Kim scored a bogey to finish second. Kim reportedly opened the locker room door in anger after the playoff loss which resulted in damage to the door.
This was his second playoff loss this season with the other coming in the Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour.
The KPGA reportedly ruled that Kim failed to maintain dignity but decided not to impose any punishment and issued just a warning.
Tom Kim issued an apology following Genesis Championship loss
Tom Kim issued an apology and agreed to pay for the damages to the locker room door following his playoff loss at the Genesis Championship to compatriot Byeong Hun An. He shared a post on Instagram a day after the tournament and said he did not mean to do it intentionally and apologized for the incident.
Kim said he had addressed this with the DP World Tour and the KPGA and claimed they had to pull the door out completely due to safety reasons.
"Hello, everyone, There has been a lot of speculation about the incident after my round yesterday at the genesis championship in my home country. There has been a lot of false reporting, and I wanted to clean things up. It's important that the information comes directly from me, openly and honestly."
"After the loss, I was frustrated, yes, absolutely.. but I can assure you with absolute truth that I had no intent of damaging any part of the locker, not a single bit. I addressed it with the DP world tour and the KPGA right after the incident, saying that the door came off. We had to fully pull it out due to safety reasons. I also let them know that I was willing to pay all expenses for the damage."
"There has also been speculation about disciplinary action. I spoke to the Tour immediately after the incident. After my apology and offer to pay damages, the matter was considered closed. I am grateful to everyone that's reached out with messages of support, but to them and everyone else that I may have let down, I apologize with all my heart."
The 2024 Genesis Championship took place from October 24th to October 27th and was Kim's second DP World Tour event of the year.
