Welsh golf legend Brian Huggett passed away on Sunday, September 24, at the age of 87. The veteran golfer had won 16 times on the European Tour circuit.
Huggett was born on November 18, 1936, in Porthcawl. His father, George, was the professional and bar steward at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Golf ran in the family, and naturally, Brian was drawn to it. He turned professional in 1951 to assist his father at the Redhill and Reigate Club in Surrey.
Brian Huggett's first significant win came 11 years later at the 1962 Dutch Open. He fired rounds of 65 and 69 on the final two days to beat Gerard de Wit by two shots. That same year, he finished T3 in the 1962 Open Championship.
Huggett also won two titles on the DP World Tour, with the 1978 B.A./Avis Open being his last victory. He received the Harry Vardon Trophy for leading the Order of Merit in 1968.
Brian Huggett was one of the greatest European players and played a significant role in the development of the European Tour and the Ryder Cup. He competed in the biennial event six times but never won it. He finished his Ryder Cup career with a record of 9-10-6 in the 25 matches he played.
Huggett captained the Great Britain and Ireland team in 1977 but couldn’t find success here either. Notably, this was the last edition before Continental European players were included in the contest.
Huggett found great success on the Senior Tour, where he won 10 times, including victories at the 1993 PGA Seniors Championship and the 1998 Senior British Open.
