The World No. 1 started strong with four birdies on the 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th on the front nine. However, his round wasn't without hiccups. On the first shot of the 472-yard 13th hole, he shot his ball 302 yards to the left bunker followed by another where his ball landed 179 yards to the right bunker.

When Scheffler hit his third shot to right green on par-4 13th, he got agitated and slammed his golf club in the bunker.

Scottie Scheffler criticizes FedExCup playoffs format

Scottie Scheffler has had six wins this year on the PGA Tour. Four of his victories came in Signature events and one in Majors.

In the pre-tournament press conference before the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Scottie Scheffler said (Sky Sports):

"I think it's silly. You can't call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament."

The second of three playoffs will be the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado. The final tournament will be the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Course. He further said:

"Hypothetically we get to East Lake and my neck flares up and it doesn't heal the way it did at The Players, I finish 30th in the FedExCup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament? Is that really the season-long race? No. It is what it is.

"It's a fun tournament. I don't really consider it the season-long race like I think the way it's called. But you've got to figure out a way to strike a balance between it being a good TV product and it still being a season-long race.

Scheffler started the Tour Championship atop the standings in 2022 and 2023. However, he failed to win the tournament and eventually lost the FedEx Cup. Rory Mcllroy won the tournament in 2022 while Viktor Hovland did it last year.
