How did Billy Horschel perform in the opening round of the BMW PGA Championship?
Billy Horschel carded a 5-under 67 in the first round of the BMW PGA Championship, finishing at T4. He is tied alongside Rory McIlroy, Ugo Coussaud, Victor Perez, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Matteo Manassero, Marcus Armitage, Dan Bradbury, Andy Sullivan, and Jeong Weon Ko, two strokes behind the lead.
Horschel started his day at Wentworth with a bogey, but this was his only one of the day. He went on to add six birdies on the remaining holes. For the uninitiated, he is a former champion at Wentworth. He won in 2021, beating Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Laurie Canter, and Jamie Donaldson by a shot margin.
Matthew Baldwin fired a bogey-free 65 in the opening round to take the early lead. Niklas Norgaard and Thomas Detry shot 66 on Thursday. Notably, Norgaard won the British Masters last month and is third in the European Ryder Cup standings.
As for Billy Horschel, he has found redemption this season. He ended last season at 63rd in the OWGR but has now jumped to 24th in the latest rankings. While he missed ten cuts and made just three top tens on the PGA Tour last season, this year he has missed only six cuts and registered seven top tens.
Besides, the 37-year-old American ended his two-year title drought by claiming the Corales Puntacana Championship. He also finished runner-up at the Open Championship.
Horschel missed the FedEx Cup playoffs last year after finishing 90th in the standings and later slipped to 110th following the fall season. This time, however, he qualified for the playoffs and went on to tie for 23rd at the Tour Championship.
