Barack Obama made his presence known at the 2024 Solheim Cup. It is being held in Virginia this year, so the Americans have the advantage of playing at home. Fans also got to see the 44th president of the United States stop by the competition.
He was announced to raucous cheers before going out and waving to the crowd of red, white, and blue fans. It was revealed that he is a member of Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, the site of this year's Solheim Cup.
He reached the Team USA area and shook hands with captain Stacy Lewis. He cheered on the team from there, greeting other members of the roster. Obama gave one more wave to the crowd that continued cheering for him.
The United States team is off to a good start so far, as Obama's presence may have spurred them on to go and play well. At the time of this writing, they had a 3-1 lead over the Europeans, who are led by captain Suzann Pettersen.
Megan Khang and Nelly Korda have teamed up to get the US rolling in fourballs after duos of Korda and Allisen Corpuz, Lauren Coughlin and Rose Zhang, and Lilia Vu and Sarah Schmelzel were 3&2 winners to begin.
Barack Obama paid a visit to Team USA before Solheim Cup
Barack Obama was getting involved even before the Solheim Cup began. The former US president stopped by two days before the competition started to talk with and meet the members of the American side, including Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Megan Khang, and Alison Lee.
Korda, the world number one, said via The Guardian:
“He knew all of our names. He congratulated all of us on all of our success as well.”
Khang, who described the team as "hungry" this year after a tie last year and losses before that, said:
“It was just super cool to have a past president show up to team dinner,” she said. "It’s pretty incredible he took time out of his day to come meet all of us. I know he plays out of here. The appreciation for the time he gave up to come to see us is incredible.”
Barack Obama's involvement didn't stop there, as he came to the Friday opening of the competition, hyped up the crowd, and cheered on the American golfers at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
Team USA has the all-time lead in the Solheim Cup, but it hasn't won in a while. The trophy stayed with Team Europe last year after a tie, and the Americans will want to get it back over Charley Hull, Celine Boutier, and company.
