Padraig Harrington recently tried to imitate Scottie Scheffler's footwork but was unable to do so. The official handle of PGA Tour Champions posted a video of Harrington's attempt on their X (formerly Twitter) handle.
In the video, the PGA Tour veteran described Scheffler's unique footwork which includes both "hitch kick" and "pull back" actions. Harrington said that Scheffler's action helped him generate speed and maintain balance.
Padraig Harrington explained that most golfers have one or the other, however, Scheffler has both. He said (via PGA Tour Champions):
"Modern players, when they come into impact, their left foot, everything is posting up on this side like so. And they have a little bit of a drag back. So they're pushing so much out there and then when they release it, it pulls back. So that's good for speed. Scotty's doing both. So Scotty's got the hitch kick and the pull back," Harrington said [0:17 onwards].
He further explained the benefits of doing both together he said:
"That hitch kick is great for straightness and that is a sign. There's hardly a player in the modern game that doesn't have a little bump back and a little bit of disc going. So both feet are doing brilliant things."
The 53-year-old said that the pullback helped generate power. He further said that maintaining balance while generating power is extremely difficult. After a failed attempt at replicating Scottie Scheffler's moves, Padraig remarked:
"See, it's very hard. It's very hard for that one to go back. Oh Jesus. No, no, I can't do that. Not a chance. Do you know what? I think what we should get right, what we need Scotty to do is a little bit of a jig. Maybe that will get it going," Harrington said [at 1:50].
Scottie Scheffler has an unbelievable 2024 season with seven wins on the PGA Tour. He recently emerged victorious at the FedExCup finale.
