Rory McIlroy suffered another heartbreak as he fell short in a playoff at the BMW PGA Championship against Billy Horschel. This was his second consecutive runner-up finish on the DP World Tour.

On Sunday, September 22, McIlroy fired a 5-under 67 to finish at 20-under. He tied with Thomas Lawrence and Horschel after the regular holes, leading to a three-way playoff. McIlroy made a birdie in the second playoff hole on par 5, 18th, while Horschel sealed the title with an eagle.

The 35-year-old has witnessed several 'so close yet so far' moments this season. His first runner-up finish in 2024 came at his first start of the year after he lost to Tommy Fleetwood in the inaugural Dubai Invitational. He then secured a solo third-place finish at the Valero Texas Open.

The worst heartbreak came at the US Open, where the four-time major champion was on the verge of ending his ten-year major drought. However, his campaign derailed in the last five holes, where he missed three close putts and finished runner-up. The third second-place finish of the year came at the Irish Open earlier this month, where he missed an eagle putt and ended up as runner-up.
