Matthew Baldwin's performance during the first round of the BMW PGA Championship included seven birdies with no bogeys. The Englishman had not led the first round of a tournament since the 2018 Soudal Open.
After the first round of the BMW PGA Championship, Baldwin said the following (via DP World Tour news service):
"It's definitely been coming. My game's been strong for a while, results haven't always shown that and I'm quite good at getting in the way of myself. I think today I've tried to be as calm and positive as I could."
Several European stars who regularly perform on the PGA Tour are well positioned on the leaderboard. Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy, and Robert MacIntyre are tied for fourth, all with a score of 5-under.
Aaron Rai is tied for 15th place, while Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose are tied for 23rd. American Billy Horschel is one of 11 players sharing fourth place.
Defending champion Ryan Fox finished the first round with a score of 1-under. His performance places him tied for 54th.
