Who is leading the 2024 Senior Open Championship after Round 1? Leaderboard explored

The first round of the 2024 Senior Open Championship concluded on Thursday, July 25 at the Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland. The course proved to be an excellent test of golf with only 18 players breaking par.

Stephen Ames carded five birdies and one bogey during the first round at the Senior Open Championship. The Canadian is looking for the first Major victory of his career, a feat he has not achieved in the Open category or in 10 years on the Senior circuit.

However, Ames will face stiff competition as four players are just one stroke behind him. Among them is Richard Green, who finished runner-up in the Senior PGA Championship earlier this season.

The top 10 in the Senior Open Championship includes stars of the circuit such as Padraig Harrington, Steven Alker, Retief Goosen and Thomas Bjorn. Defending champion Alex Cejka is tied for 28th, five shots off the lead.

Two-time Major champion John Daly withdrew from the Senior Open before the first round. Mark Hensby also withdrew after finishing the day at 6-over.
