Why did Sebastian Soderberg WD from The 2024 Open Championship?

Sebastian Soderberg is no longer going to play at The Open Championship. As of Wednesday, July 17, the Swedish golfer has officially removed his name from the field due to a combination of injuries. Currently, Soderberg's back and ribs are ailing, and he's pulling out of The Open as a result.

Since the withdrawal comes so close to the start of the tournament (it tees off early tomorrow morning), he will not be replaced. The field will simply be one shy of its usual size.

Soderberg was initially scheduled to play the first two rounds alongside Matteo Manassero and Shubhankar Sharma. They will just go at it by themselves on Thursday morning. So far, no one but Soderberg has withdrawn from The Open Championship.

Soderberg was eligible to play at The Open Championship because of his status in the top 30 in the final Race to Dubai Rankings in 2023. The 33-year-old has one victory in his career on the DP World Tour, which came over Rory McIlroy and three others at the 2019 Omega European Masters.

This is the second time the golfer has had to leave a tournament over the last couple of months. Soderberg came down with an injury before the start of last month's KLM Open, a DP World Tour event, and had to drop out.
