Xander Schauffele reacted to Bryson DeChambeau being surprised on the greens at the 2025 US Open. They have both been paired together for the first two rounds of the Major at the Oakmont Country Club. Players had a pretty tough time on the greens during the first round of the Major, which was held on Thursday, June 12.
On the 12th hole, Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele both ended up making a bogey, and during the post-round press conference, they talked about the struggle on the hole.
Speaking of playing on the 12th Hole, Schauffele said (via ASAP Sports):
"I think 12 is starting to become interesting. I thought I hit a decent drive, ended up somewhere in the bunker there, which was kind of weird. José and Bryson, they hit these really high drives up to the right and they kind of hung in there."
He was later asked by a reporter:
"Bryson was surprised that he stayed in a better spot than you."
In response, the world No. 3 said:
"He just flew it further, so he probably didn't catch that severe downslope. My ball rolled through the rough and first cut to get to where it went. A few weird things like that, but walking up on the tee, you can tell it's going to bounce somewhere.
Before playing on the 12th, Bryson DeChambeau was in a better position than Xander Schauffele. He was at even par while starting the game on the 12th, while Schauffele was at 2-over.
But things flipped on the back nine, Schauffele made a bogey on the 13th but found some relief on the concluding hole and made two back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th for a 2-over 72. Meanwhile, DeChambeau ended up making two more bogeys after a bogey on the 12th. He settled for an overall score of 3-over.
Bryson DeChambeau opens up about the difficulty at the US Open 2025
Bryson DeChambeau, the defending champion, started with a bogey on the first hole, but then he made two birdies and a bogey on the ninth, and then three more bogeys on the back nine. In the post-round press conference of the opening round, DeChambeau reflected on the difficulty of the venue, saying (via ASPA Sports):
"Just didn't get anything out of it. I kept it 1-under through 7, through 8, perfect drive on 9, and this golf course can come up and get you pretty quick and you've just got to be on your game, and it got me, and I wasn't fully on my game. Pretty disappointed with how I played. It's not too far off. Just got to get the putting a little bit more dialed, and I'll be right there because 3-over could have easily been 2-under today."
The lowest of the opening round at the 2025 US Open was 4-under. It was scored by JJ Spaun. The conditions were tough, and most of the players had a tough time on the greens.
