Washington, Feb 12 (IANS): Golfer Tiger Woods announced that he will take a leave from the PGA Tour and only return when he thinks he is "ready".

Woods made the announcement on his website Wednesday, after a run of poor performances, which included shooting the worst round of his professional career in January, an 11-over-par 82 in the second round of the Phoenix Open, reports Xinhua.

"Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me," Woods said.

"My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf. Like I've said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I'm ready, I'll be back."

Woods wanted to compete in The Honda Classic near his hometown in Florida in two weeks, but he added: "I won't be there unless my game is tournament-ready."

The Masters, the first major tournament of 2015, which Woods has won four times, begins April 9.

Woods has 14 major titles in his career.
