Golf and Lunar missions are two things that have nothing in common, except for the story of the astronauts on Apollo 14, the third moon landing which was launched in January 1971.
In the grainy clip below (it’s from the 70s, what do you expect?), astronaut Alan Shepard can be seen hitting golf balls on the surface of the moon. Due to the limited flexibility of his suit, Shepard could only hit the golf balls one-handed.
In the video, Shepard can also be heard claiming the second ball went “miles and miles and miles”, but in reality the distance was only as long as 300-370 metres.
This golf exercise was one of the less serious things that the astronauts did while on the moon. And that is one sentence that you never expected to read.
