The golf Grand Slam is the highest sporting result that can be achieved in professional golf. Winning is so rare in this that there are true legends who were never able to complete it during their illustrious careers.

Achieving the golf Grand Slam is nothing more than winning each of the Major championships at least once during a player's career. It is such a difficult challenge that only five male players and six female players have achieved it since there have been tournaments with the category of Majors.

Like everything in golf, the "Grand Slam" concept has also evolved. During the first organized stage of the sport (late 19th and early 20th centuries), several tournaments of great importance emerged, but four of them were consolidated as "Majors".

These four were the US Amateur, the US Open, the British Amateur and The Open Championship (also known as the British Open). Only the legendary Robert "Bobby" Jones Jr. managed to win these four tournaments at least once in his career.

Jones is the only golf Grand Slam winner in this first stage, but his feat is even more relevant because he won them all in the same year (1930). This is something that has never been repeated by any player.

After the consolidation of the professional circuits and their separation from the amateurs, professional tournaments were created to bring together the best male players in the world. These were The Masters and the PGA Championship, which joined the US Open and The Open Championship as the four Majors of the modern era.

Only five players have managed to complete the career golf Grand Slam in this new stage:

No one in the modern era has been able to repeat Bobby Jones' feat of winning the four Majors that make up the golf Grand Slam in the same year. However, Tiger Woods did manage to win them consecutively between 2000 and 2001. This feat is referred to as the "Tiger Slam."

Great legends such as Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino were unable to achieve the career golf Grand Slam. Three active players still have a chance to achieve it, as they are only one short of the four required titles.

These players are Phil Mickelson (missing the US Open), Rory McIlroy (missing The Masters) and Jordan Spieth (missing the PGA Championship). Others like Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, and Jon Rahm have won two of the four and, given their youth and quality, can aspire to win the other two.

The women's golf Grand Slam

The concept of "Grand Slam" in women's golf has the same meaning as men, but its history is more complex, as several tournaments have had the category of Majors throughout history. In fact, not all circuits recognize the same events as "Majors".

However, the Major championships sanctioned by the LPGA Tour are widely recognized to mark the career Grand Slam winners. This is due to the recognition of the American-based circuit as the highest level of world golf.

There are six players who have achieved the career Grand Slam, with the caveat that not all have achieved the same number of major titles, because not in all eras there have been the same number of tournaments considered Majors.

For this reason, Karrie Webb is the only player who has won five different Majors in her career (called Super Slam), while five have won four:
