Anthony Kim returned to professional golf earlier this year after a nearly 12-year break from the sport. The 39-year-old faced several issues with his physical and mental health and is now a part of LIV Golf as a wildcard player.
The former PGA Tour star has made 11 starts in the Saudi-based league this year and ranked near last place 56th with zero points earned this season. However, Kim is not being relegated from the league and believes he has what it takes to be in contention for the 2025 season.
He told Gulf News (via Golf Monthly):
"I know a lot of people have probably seen my last year and don't think that's possible [contending], but I think it's going to happen. I 100% believe in myself, and I think it's just a matter of time. Obviously, the results aren't what I wanted so far, but I think I am ahead of schedule."
In the interview, Kim talked about all the work he's been putting into improving himself on the course. He added that his current practice and training regimen is the most professional it has ever been in his career.
Despite facing criticism from fans worldwide, he is unfazed. Once ranked sixth in the world, the current ranked 4,595th player believes that the work he's been putting in will pay off in LIV Golf's 2025 season.
Why did Anthony Kim take a break from golf?
Following a return to competitive golf after a 12-year-long break, Anthony Kim opened up about his struggles in an exclusive interview with LIV Golf's David Feherty. The interview titled 'The Journey Back' details the former PGA Tour winner's relationship with golf.
During his break, Kim was accused of taking a $10 - $20 million insurance settlement for a spine injury. He addressed the fans' opinions and stated that he underwent several surgeries over the past few years including a spinal fusion surgery for a herniated disk.
Kim revealed that he had been the victim of scam artists and battled addiction issues. The 2009 Presidents Cup winner said he never "loved" the game of golf, stating that the sport had always been riddled with many emotions for him.
He disclosed that his family had to face several hardships to get him the opportunity to play the sport when he was younger. Kim stated that was the reason for feeling an added pressure to perform and eventually led him to have an "aggressive" nature on and off the course.
In the interview with David Feherty, he said (via LIV Golf):
"I don't think I ever loved it. Golf was filled with lots of different emotions for me. Because my family had to go through a lot to get me this opportunity to play golf. So with that added pressure, I was willing to risk a lot more. That was my nature. I was aggressive on the golf course, I was aggressive off the golf course, and that led to my demise."
