Crans Montana (Switzerland), Sep 4 (IANS) China’s Ye Wo-cheng will create history by becoming the youngest player to tee up at the Omega European Masters when it gets underway at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club here Thursday.

The 13-year-old joins the illustrious class of youngsters from China, eager to stamp their mark on the world stage with their youth and talent.

A two-time winner of the US Kids Junior World Championship, Ye beat the tournament record previously held by world number one Tiger Woods with a 12-under-par card and could be a surprise package if he is not overwhelmed by the occasion this week.

“I’m feeling a little nervous as I’m aware that I’m the youngest player in the field this week. But I tell myself to always stay focus and relax,” said Ye, of his second professional event following his debut in his home country Open in May where he missed the cut.

The young Chinese will have Austria’s Martin Wiegele and Sweden’s Mathias Gronberg for company in his opening two rounds but when asked who he regards as his role model, Ye’s answer resonates with most of his peers.

“Tiger Woods. I’ve not met Tiger before but if I’ve the chance to speak to him, I’ll ask him how he handles the media pressure like what I’m facing now!” said Ye.

The Omega European Masters is the only tournament on European soil to be jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour and will mark the start of the second half of the Asian Tour season.
