What we learned in the Carolina Panthers vs Atlanta Falcons game

Carolina Panthers v Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers v Atlanta Falcons

The Carolina Panthers had a chance to win the NFC South crown and end the Atlanta Falcons playoff hopes. All the Atlanta Falcons needed to do is win and they are in the postseason for the second consecutive season. If Atlanta didn't win, they would need a Seattle Seahawks loss or Atlanta would be out. The Falcons defeated the Panthers 22-10.

It was a really ugly game from start to finish. However, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan played a turnover-free football game. He completed 28-of-45 passes for 317 yards and a touchdown. Devonta Freeman was a workhorse for the Falcons all game long. He caught nine passes for 85 yards receiving and a touchdown. Freeman caught a 19-yard touchdown pass on the opening possession of the game for the Falcons.

Freeman also rushed for 23 yards on 11 carries. Tevin Coleman also rushed for 23 yards on 11 carries. Julio Jones caught five passes for 80 yards receiving and Mohamed Sanu caught seven passes for 71 yards receiving.

Cam Newton struggled really bad for the Carolina Panthers. He completed 14-of-34 passes for 180 yards for one touchdown and three interceptions. Newton started the game 0-for-9. He was inaccurate all game long. For his sake, hopefully, he got his bad play out of his system since the playoffs are next week.

Newton also rushed for 59 yards on 11 carries. Devin Funchess had Carolina's only touchdown in the second-quarter on a 4-yard touchdown reception. Funchess caught two passes for 48 yards receiving.

The Panthers rushing attack was contained. Other than Newton, everybody else rushed for 28 yards on 12 carries. Graham Gano made a 42-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Panthers. Matt Bryant made five field goals for the Falcons (30 (2x), 42 (2x), and 33 yards).

Carolina finishes the regular season with an 11-5 record and they will play on the road against the New Orleans Saints (11-5) next Sunday. Atlanta finishes the regular season with a 10-6 record and they will play on the road against the Los Angeles Rams (11-5) next Saturday Night.
