Former US president Jimmy Carter recently enrolled in home hospice care in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 98. His family decided to spend the remainder of his time at home with them and receive hospice care rather than additional medical intervention.

Jimmy Carter's health decline

In the past 10 years, the former president's health has declined, particularly during the coronavirus outbreak, which has limited his public appearances, even at his cherished Maranatha Baptist Church.

When Carter had a tiny malignant growth removed from his liver in August 2015, his health problems started. The following year, Carter announced he was done with treatment because an experimental drug had eliminated all signs of cancer.

Legacy of Jimmy Carter

Carter served a single, tumultuous term as the 39th President of the United States and was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980.

However, Carter has spent decades since leaving the White House advocating for democracy, public health, and human rights through The Carter Center.

Despite challenges like the Cold War and social unrest, Jimmy Carter achieved foreign policy successes like brokering Mideast peace talks. He appointed a record number of women and minorities to federal positions, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the Supreme Court.

Carter also prioritized energy conservation and promoted domestic production of coal, oil, and gas while investing in renewables.

Staying Positive in Aging: Lessons from Jimmy Carter

As we age, it's important to maintain a positive outlook on life. One way to do this is to focus on the positive aspects of our lives rather than dwelling on the negative.

Like Jimmy Carter, we can reflect on the exciting and gratifying experiences we've had throughout our lives and be content with whatever the future holds. We can stay active and exercise gradually and with the guidance of a healthcare professional.

It is also important to maintain a positive mindset and embrace the opportunities that come our way so we can continue to lead fulfilling and joyful lives well into our golden years.

A Life Lived to the Fullest

In 2015, upon his cancer diagnosis as a nonagenarian, Carter expressed satisfaction with his long life, saying:

"I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes. I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence."

Despite the challenges and uncertainty that may have come his way, he was content with the life he had lived. His positive outlook on life serves as an inspiration for many who may be facing difficulties, reminding us that a life filled with adventure and fulfilment is possible, regardless of the obstacles we may encounter.

Carter was born in the years between World War I and the Great Depression in Plains, Georgia, where he has spent the majority of his life with his wife, Rosalynn. He continues to inspire many despite his health issues, and his work with The Carter Center has been crucial in advancing public health, democracy, and human rights.
