Keep cancer at bay by following these preventative measures

Say no to smoking.

Cancer is one of few diseases for which a definite cure hasn’t been discovered till date. It is comforting to know however that the life-threatening ailment can be treated if diagnosed during the early stages.

It is widely believed that chances of developing cancer for the most part depend on one’s regular habits and lifestyle choices. So if you are concerned about your health and prevention of the horrid disease, consider the following preventative measures which can take you a long way in your life.

1. Say no to tobacco: Avoiding tobacco or better still, deciding to stop it altogether is one of the most important health decisions you can make. Using any form of tobacco puts you directly in the eye of the cancer storm. Smoking has been linked to various types of cancer including cancer of the lungs, bladder, cervix and kidney and chewing tobacco has been linked to cancer of the oral cavity and pancreas.

There are many substances available over the counter in several pharmacies which gives you the effect of tobacco while secretly reducing your dependence upon it. Consult your doctor about these products if you intend on quitting.

2. Maintain a healthy diet: Consuming healthy foods doesn’t eradicate the chances of contracting the disease but reduces the chances of acquiring it. Make it a habit to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, limit consumption of fatty foods and try to give up drinking alcohol as well.

3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Along with consuming a healthy platter, it is essential to exercise as well. By controlling your weight, you can reduce the risk of developing cancer of the breasts, prostate, lungs, colon and kidneys. Take up a resolution of doing 30 minutes minimum of physical activities on a regular basis. Kudos to you if you can exceed the half an hour mark.

4. Take protection from the sun: While the sun is a principal source of Vitamin D, it is also a carcinogen. Skin cancer, which is common when the skin is excessively exposed to the harmful ultraviolet rays emanating from the sun. We can protect ourselves by staying away from the midday sun, covering sensitive areas such as the back and neck, applying sunscreen and avoiding tanning beds and sunlamps.

5. Go for regular checkups: A more scientific approach for prevention of the malady is by getting yourself immunised. Immunisation for Hepatitis B virus and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) are an effective check on cancer. Furthermore, thorough annual medical checkups and regular cancer screening schedules can make a big difference when it comes to keeping the killer disease at bay.
