Workout in the rain!

Go face the challenge out there

The next time you feel like working out but shelf the thought because it’s pouring out there, think again. Working out in the rain might actually be quite good for you. Researchers have proved that exercising in the rain builds resistance and burns more fat.

Japanese scientists conducted a study with seven men who were made to run in a climate-controlled chamber to replicate a cold, rainy atmosphere. The same men were then made to run in normal conditions. The research revealed that the men trained harder, used higher levels of oxygen and burned off a little more energy when they worked out in damp conditions as compared to regular weather.

Here are a few fitness mantras to try out this monsoon:

1. Cycling: Cycling is perfect for such weather. Although it might be a bit risky when it comes to skidding, traction and visibility, pumping the pedal helps to tone the calf and thigh muscles along with burning more calories as a lot more effort is required while manoeuvring in the rain.

2. Weightlifting: Why not take the dumbbells out of the gym and into the rain once in a while. You could try bicep curls, squats, lunges, push-ups and even pull-ups when there is a light shower outside.

3. Jogging: Many fitness enthusiasts prefer to go running when it’s dark and pouring outside. The wet conditions are ideal as the rain creates a tougher road to navigate. This is a first-rate form of exercise as it helps to strengthen the legs, cardio-vascular functioning of the body and provides a strong core with stability.

4. Swimming: Who says swimming is only meant to be done on a bright, sunny day? The next time its drizzling outside, head to a nearby swimming pool or preferably even a shallow lake and belt a couple of laps. Outdoor swimming proves to be a tougher challenge as compared to swimming indoors in heated pools as it helps speed up the body’s metabolism.

However, it is crucial to understand the fact that exercising in the rain can also be harmful if you do not take necessary precautions. So next time you plan to head out into the rain, keep all the equipment ready well in advance.

Here are a few tips:

1. Wear a jacket with a hood to keep your body warm or if not, a baseball cap to prevent rain dripping on your face and causing distorted vision.

2. Preferably sport fluorescent clothes to help vehicles or other passers-by notice you.

3. If you choose to carry cell phones or other audio devices, make sure it is packed in a waterproof cover.

4. Finally, most importantly, if there is lightning or thunder showers, do not venture out as that might actually be dangerous. Have an energised but safe workout.
