One of Goa's brightest footballers Catao Fernandes passed away at the age of 77. Catao was part of the famous A-B-C-D of Vasco SC in the late-60s and early-70s alongside Andrew D'Souza, Bernard Pereira and Dominic Pereira.
Catao thrilled football lovers with his ability to penetrate the opponents left wing and shred his colleagues with his passes from the left. He was a crucial and prolific goalscorer.
Catao joined Vasco SC in 1964 after having had his first stint with Bombay's Caltex besides the legendary Neville D'Souza. It was during his time that Vasco SC became the first Goan team to have won a tournament in Bombay. Catao scored a brace in Vasco's win over Tata SC in the finals of the Western India Football Association (WIFA) Trophy at the Cooperage Ground.
Catao first captained Goa in the 1967 Nationals held in Orissa. He was first capped for Goa in 1966 and donned colours for the State till 1970 in the Santosh Trophy. Out of the legendary A-B-C-D of Andrew D'Souza, Bernard Pereira, Catao Fernandes and Dominic Pereira; only Bernard Pereira is the lone surviving member.
