NASCAR icon Roger Penske has vouched for an increase in the number of double-header events between NASCAR and IndyCar. Currently, two of both series' premier events, the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, are held around the halfway mark of their campaigns.
NASCAR and IndyCar remain two of the major motorsport series in the United States. As mentioned previously, the IndyCar and NASCAR schedules currently align during two major events: the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. While the Indianapolis 500 race takes place at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts the NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 event.
Roger Penske, one of the moguls of the sport who owns teams in both NASCAR and IndyCar, recently voiced his opinion on this double-header event. Penske, who has found immense success in both the series in recent years, stated (via Jayski):
"We might see, as we did with NASCAR, doubleheaders. I haven’t talked about this, I’m not announcing anything but think about it, Indy, we ran a doubleheader there with IndyCar and NASCAR."
The 87-year-old, who is worth $6.8B (according to Forbes), added:
"I know it was successful. We could see it with the fan base at Indy."
It is critical to note that Penske owns the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the racetrack that hosts the Indy 500. He has enjoyed tremendous success in recent years. In NASCAR, his team claimed back-to-back titles with Joey Logano (2022, 2024) and Ryan Blaney (2023).
Meanwhile, in IndyCar, Team Penske has secured two championships in the last six seasons, led by star drivers Josef Newgarden and Will Power.
Roger Penske purchases Grand Prix Association of Long Beach
In addition to advocating for more IndyCar x NASCAR collaborations, Penske recently made headlines with another major acquisition. Through his company Penske Entertainment, he purchased the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach LLC from its owner, Gerald Forsythe.
The acquisition, announced ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, is seen as a strategic move to solidify Penske’s presence in North America’s longest-running street race.
While the financial details of the purchase were not disclosed, Roger Penske expressed his excitement about the milestone event scheduled for April 2025. He said in a press release (via Forbes):
"This race and its loyal fans matter so much to everyone across the IndyCar community, and we’re looking forward to a very special 50th anniversary celebration this April, as well."
Beyond NASCAR and IndyCar, Roger Penske's Team Penske competes in the IMSA SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship. Penske has guided the team to six IndyCar Championships and 20 Indy 500 race wins.
