Late IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon's son Oliver has decided to take the same path as his father and become a professional racing driver. Wheldon's wife Susie shared the latest update on Oliver's open wheel racing career as the youngster continued his sensational podium run in the American series.
Former IndyCar champion and two-time Indy 500 winner Wheldon tragically passed away in 2011 during a race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. When Dan passed away, his elder son Sebastian was two years old, and his younger son Oliver was merely seven months old.
Despite not having their father around, both Sebastian and Oliver found a similar interest to motorsports like him, and have been making steady progress up the American open wheel racing series ladder. Oliver Wheldon made his USF Junior debut this year and has been on a podium streak.
The USF Junior season began with the triple header at NOLA Motorsports Park where Oliver managed to get on the podium in all three races. Up next was the triple header at Barber Motorsport Park. Dan Wheldon's son managed to finish on the podium in two of the three races.
The most recent race weekend was at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Oliver Wheldon again finished both the races on the podium. The first race took place under sunny conditions but the weather changed dramatically for the second race. Despite the pouring conditions, Oliver managed to finish the second race in P2, getting his seventh podium in eight races.
Dan Wheldon's wife, Susie, uploaded videos on Instagram of her son celebrating on the podium with a caption that read:
“Proud of you @oliver.wheldon another podium and valuable points for the championship”

After eight rounds, Oliver Wheldon sits second in the USF Juniors championship on 181 points, just seven points behind the championship leader Leonardo Escorpioni. Oliver's #98 VRD Racing entry is sponsored by Andretti Global sponsor Gainbridge.
Dan Wheldon's wife, Susie, and children honored at the 2025 St. Pete GP
Dan Wheldon won the inaugural St. Pete GP held in 2005. After moving away from Britain and settling in the US to race in IndyCar, St. Petersburg became Wheldon's second home. On the 20th anniversary of his win at the inaugural St. Pete GP, Wheldon's wife, Susie, and kids were honored at the track.
Susie Wheldon waved the green flag to start the race, whereas Dan’s elder son Sebastian drove the Honda Civic Type-R pace car to bring the field to green flag.
“To be here with Sebastian and Oliver 20 years later -- and for Sebastian to be driving a pace car in the parade lap -- is really a full circle moment. And I am honored to wave the green flag for the start of the race,” said Susie Wheldon via IndyStar.
Dan Wheldon's elder son Sebastian, races in the Italian F4 championship for the 2025 season with PREMA Racing. Sebastian is also sponsored by Gainbridge and is an Andretti Indy Jr. development driver.
