2013 National Sub-Junior Judo Championship: Manipur emerge overall champions

15th Asian Games Doha 2006 - Judo

Hosts Manipur underlined their growing prowess emerging overall champions in the National Sub-Junior Judo championship, which concluded at the Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium in Imphal.

Egged on by a vociferous home crowd, Manipur judokas reigned supreme in both the boys’ and girls’ categories in the four-day big-ticket event to take the top position with 47 points.

In the boys’ section, another North-eastern state Mizoram bagged the team championship, while Delhi had to settle for the runners-up position.

In the girls’ section, hosts Manipur emerged as the team champions, while Mizoram took the runners-up position.

Jharkhand’s Unnati Sharma was adjudged the best judoka in the girls’ category, while Haryana’s Niten was adjudged the best judoka in the boys’ category.

The trophies for the best judokas in the boys’ and girls’ section were handed out by the parents of Manipur’s first women judo Olympian Brojeshwori Devi, who passed away last month.

As many as 400 judokas from 22 states participated in the championship, which was organised by the Manipur Judo Association (MJA) under the auspices of the Judo Federation of India (JFI).

Meanwhile, the Judo Federation of India has swung into action and imposed a life ban on West Bengal judo team coach Priyanjan Das Gupta for his unbecoming behaviour during the national event.

The Bengal coach had slapped judoka Payel Sengupta after she failed to bag a gold medal and instead settled for a silver medal against Kerala’s N. Vijitha of Kerala in the 44kg bout of the under-15 category.

The incident shows that the JFI under new president Mukesh Kumar means business when it comes to instilling discipline.

The Judo Federation of India (JFI) had earlier elected Mukesh Kumar as its new president at its recent AGM held in Imphal on the eve of the National Sub-Junior Championship.

Mukesh Kumar, a former Sports Authority of India (SAI) official, who earlier served as JFI secretary, replaced Jagdish Tytler, who had served as JFI president for many years.

Manipur has also bagged the overall championship title at the 2012 National Sub-Junior Championships held at the Desgbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium, RG Baruah Sports Complex, Guwahati last October.
