Commentary

What a moment it must be for the Afghans back home, witnessing their team perform exceedingly well in a big tournament as the WC, even amidst the chaos and sadness. It felt that the Afghan side was playing for a purpose bigger than themselves and it rightfully showed on the ground.

With that, we have come to the end of another exciting day of cricketing action here in Sharjah. Do tune in tomorrow at the same time as we bring all the live action from the double-header Tuesday where South Africa square up against West Indies while Pakistan after the heroics against India look to take the field against New Zealand -- oof that contest has some heat alright in it.

Kyle Coetzer: Clearly, it wasn't one of our better days. We have been playing good cricket to get to this stage. It is a real sighter for us to see that this is the level we have to play. We have to give them a lot of credit, In our side, we had Mark who was brilliant. I felt we fought hard in the field. It just is a level check, where the standards are. Its really good that we are here and playing. We will be better. We have the guys for that and we are playing good cricket. Its the spirit and belief amongst the players that is the key. As a group, we will come together. We will go to the hotel and gather together.

Mohammad Nabi: Thanks to my dear Allah that we won the match. Yeah, this is our plan. Bat first, put in a big score, the way our openers started, we finished the powerplay well. In Middle, Gurbax and Zadran played well as well. The world knows the Rashid and Mujeeb are the best bowlers, they are playing with best franchises. Hopefully, we will play good in the tournament.. (On Afghan batters facing Rashid & Mujeeb in nets) They play really well, they hit 'em everywhere. They show no respect to them. When we play local tournaments, Rashid and company are the most expensive (laughs). Mujeeb is playing his first T20 World Cup match and he got the Player of the Match award, that's good to see.

Mujeeb ur Rahman, who else, is the Player of the Match: This was our first game and we've won. It's my first Man of the Match award in a World Cup and I am thankful to the fans of Afghanistan. The fans supporting us give us a lot of positive energy and it's great to be playing for them.

Afghanistan win by 130 runs

If yesterday Pakistan annihilated India then Afghanistan tonight, deracinated the Scots. This was a marauding, this was authority...this was extraordinary. Gosh, we have seen a few collapses already in the tournament and it's only been the first week of the tournament.

Remember, Scotland are no minnows with the bat but the Afghan bowlers just showed that they still have a long way to go, if they want to play competitively in the big boys group. Warning bells must be ringing across the team camps in Group 2.

Chasing a target of 191 was never going to be an easy task by any stretch of imagination. However, George Munsey came out with a 'no holds barred approach' and it worked like a charm in the first over.

He played as many as three switch hits and collected few early runs for his side. However, that was to be the only bright spot in an otherwise gloomy-looking scorecard. In walked Mujeeb Ur Rahman to bowl his willy off spins and started a procession that never stopped, up until the last wicket.

In the very first over, he sent skipper Kyle Coetzer back to the hut by cleaning him up. Calum MacLeod quickly followed his skipper by getting pinned in front of the stumps. The off-spinner continued with his reign of terror and sent one Scot batter back to the hut after another. In the process, Mohammad Shahzad picked a stunner off the bowling of Naveen Ul Haq, to cap off an almost perfect night.

After Mujeeb became the second-youngest player to pick a five-fer in the T20 WC, it was the turn of Rashid Khan to pile in on the misery of Scotland. He picked a 4-fer as well and ensured that the side had an early dinner. As many as 5 Scot batters returned to the hut without opening the scoring. Such was the domination by the Afghans.

Scotland, despite showing a lot of heart went down rather tamely and with the magnitude of the defeat, their net run rate would have taken a massive beating.

10.2 Rashid Khan to Bradley Wheal, OUT! BOWLED HIM! IT'S ALL OVER! Fittingly, it had to be another one crashing into the stumps to bring the curtains down on an endless procession - another googly and landing on a full length just around off. Wheal lunges forward with a stride but plays down the wrong line as the ball spins in between bat and pad to make a horrible mess of the stumps. Decimation of the highest order this - Afghanistan beat Scotland by 130 runs!

Khan strikes immediately after the break and another Scottish batter departs trying to play the dreadful reverse sweep shot. Rashid gets his third and Afghanistan are one wicket away from starting the WC with bang!

10.1 Rashid Khan to Josh Davey, OUT! ANOTHER LBW! Davey reviews it! Back of a length googly that drifts into the stumps, Davey plonks his front pad well across and fails to get bat on his reverse-paddle - the umpteenth such attempt from a Scottish batter today. The ball pins him on the thigh pad and it remains to be seen if height is a factor.

No it isn't! It's three reds in fact on ball tracking as it would have crashed into the leg-stump. Onto the last wicket now!

Scotland have been plain pathetic against the spinners. Their only ploy is to play sweep and reverse sweep at everything.
