A fine performance by Spirit and they will be stoked after their display today. Time will tell if they can convert it into a good run of wins or not but they have made the right start. As for Barmy Army, they'll take heart from the positives although they would want to quickly brush this aside and bounce back in their next encounter.

Nicola Carey (Spirit captain): Always nice to get off to a win in the first game of the tournament. I thought the girls were outstanding today, particularly Mahika with the ball. All in all a good performance. I thought my bowling was shocking (grins) and I was very scratchy with the bat. I thought the girls were fantastic with the ball, especially with the short boundaries. We had some good cameos with the bat as well. It was really fun last year in Singapore so to get to Hong Kong is fantastic. It's awesome to be here with the girls.

Lauren Winfield Hill (Barmy Army captain): Yeah obviously wanted a win on the board but there are a lot of positives. We took 6 wickets which were a good sign but ultimately we were around 15-20 runs short. Tara did well with both bat ad ball. Campbelle played a little cameo. The tournament has just started and this can happen. We leaked a lot of runs square, we could have bowled a bit fuller. It’s a quick turnaround tomorrow and there is no time to rest on your laurels.

Mahika Gaur (Player of the Match): Yeah I think it was a great start for us. Personally, it felt great to be bowling out there. The way we started off with the bat, credit goes to Dunkley. So we were quite confident. Carey gave me a lot of confidence when I was bowling.

A chase that seemed straightforward but as it turns out, it wasn't as easy as one would have envisioned. Full marks to Barmy Army for making a fist of it and stretching it into the penultimate over. But with a mere 135 on the board thanks to a breezy unbeaten 33 from Shemaine Campbelle, their bowlers had their task cut out.

It didn't help that Fatima Sana Shaikh and Tara Norris bowled a few too many loose deliveries that got Sophia Dunkley up and running. The superstar from England wasted no time in asserting herself as she tore into Norris in particular in the 3rd over with a determination to put the result of the contest beyond doubt at the earliest. Rumana Ahmed trapped Sarah Bryce in front but Natthakan Chantham joined Dunkley in maximizing the field restrictions as the duo powered along.

Norris returned to break the game open with consecutive wickets and once Dunkley departed in the following over, the game had sprung to life out of nowhere. Skipper Nicola Carey then took matters into her own hands as she steadied the ship with Kerry-Anne Tomlinson for company. After a brief period of consolidation, they found the odd boundary while rotating strike at will, putting Spirit firmly in front again while also sealing the bonus point along the way.

Rumana returned to deal another wicket and while Fatima followed suit herself, it was just a case of delaying the inevitable. Carey managed to get the job done and fittingly, she had the final say in the end result as she sealed it with a boundary. Barmy Army can take heart from the fact that they made Spirit work hard for their runs despite the blistering start they got off to, although they have work to do of their own ahead of their next game. Cardoso once sent down an over where she picked up a hat-trick with a run out on either side of it. Not to be today though even as Barmy Army needed something as freakish as that. Spirit win by 4 wickets with 10 deliveries to spare!
