That brings us to the end of the opening match of the second season of the Road Safety World Series. It was such a delight to watch these legends back on the field. We have a double header tomorrow. Stuart Binny, Player of the Match- I think everyone was excited to be here. I started training three weeks ago. Happy that I could express myself today. It’s just the mindset when you are a coach. I learned situations that I didn’t learn while playing for India. It’s nice to meet my old friends again. We got to a stage where I was tiring a bit when I was not getting the timing. Yusuf said just give me the strike and I will hit the sixes.

Sachin Tendulkar, Indian Legends skipper- Couldn’t have asked for more. Fantastic first half and we finished off really well. It was a joy to watch Suresh. The way Binny batted and the way Yusuf finished. At that particular moment I felt Stuart could go there and be there for a while. He paced his innings rather well. It was not slogging, iit was clean striking. Proper cricketing shots.

The partnership between Raina and Stuart set the game for us. All I have told the guys, we are here because we have enjoyed so much in this game. Effort has to be there. We are representing Indian senior teams. There will be good days and bad days.

There was some catches dropped but it’s part and parcel of the game. It was incredible. I have played here long time ago. I was here last time in 2015 or 16. The stadium has gotten better and the response has been fantastic.

Jonty Rhodes, South Africa Legends skipper- It’s always good to get the first game out of the way. The Indian side played brilliantly. At one stage we looked like keeping them to 180 but Binny and Yusuf batted out of their skins. However good to get the first game away. We will be try to get 11 fit players out on the park in the next match. We are good enough players and we need to keep learning from our mistakes. I was jumping around like a silly old man.

Earlier in the day, it was the Indian Legends skipper Sachin Tendulkar who won the toss and elected to bat. The opening duo of the master himself and Naman Ojha got India off to a solid start in the powerplay but both the batters were dismissed at quick intervals after sharing a 46 runs stand.

Suresh Raina and Stuart Binny resurrected the innings with some delightful shots and looked in control of proceedings. It was a good partnership between them that got India back on track. Binny kept plundering the Proteas bowlers all around the park even after the wickets of Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh.

He found an able partner in Yusuf Pathan in the later stages as the duo smashed 74 runs in the final 4 overs to take their side to a mammoth score of 217. Binny remained unbeaten on 82 of just 42 deliveries while Yusuf Pathan struck a quickfire 35 of a mere 15 deliveries.

Irfan Pathan: To be very honest it was fantastic to just go out there and play alongside the Master. Representing the country as well but at the same time it was fun. Lot of pressure - not so much on us (bowlers) but the batting. I think Stuart took the game away from South Africa. Good to see the Master batting and Yuvi as well - the more they play they'll get better. I've been bowling about 4-5 sessions in the nets. Barring the wides, it was good. Swing in the 17th and 18th over? I'll take that (grins).

The run chase never really took off as far as the Proteas Legends were concerned as the slowness of the surface never really allowed them to strike big. They needed to get off to a blazing start if they had to get anywhere close to the victory target but the Indian bowlers were right on the money from the word go. The opening partnership between Morne Van Wyk and Andrew Puttick yielded 43 runs but it came in 6 overs.

Rahul Sharma provided India with the maiden breakthrough in the form of Van Wyk’s wicket and from there on it was one-way traffic. The Indian bowlers kept tightening the screws and South Africa kept falling behind in the run-chase. The Indian spinners made a great account of themselves and kept bowling slowly with guile and deception.

Rahul Sharma and Pragyan Ojha made the South African batters dance to their tune as they shared 5 wickets between them and put the brakes on the Proteas. They couldn’t quite press on the accelerator and kept staring down the barrel. The only bright spot for the Proteas was the batting of Jonty Rhodes who came in very late but turned the clock back with some fascinating strokes.

Munaf Patel also imposed himself on the match and rolled back the years with some delightful slower deliveries. He bagged two crucial wickets and displayed a wide array of trickery. Rhodes was the top scorer for the Proteas scoring 38 of 27 deliveries but by then, the match had already been sealed by the Indian Legends. Rahul Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for India, bagging 3 wickets while Munaf Patel chipped in with a couple.

A thoroughly convincing performance from the India Legends as they ease past the South Africa Legends by 61 runs to start off the campaign on a winning note. It was an exceptional all-round display by the defending champions as they defended their massive score of 217 runs with ease.

19.6 Irfan Pathan to Jonty Rhodes, length delivery with width on offer, Rhodes reaches for it and smears it past cover before the sweeper gets across to keep it down to two. That's that for this contest though - India Legends win by a massive 61-run margin!

19.5 Irfan Pathan to Jonty Rhodes, FOUR! ADDING INSULT TO INJURY! Too late though! Fuller outside off as he takes pace off again, Rhodes pumps it straight through the line of it and powers it to the fence for a boundary.

19.4 Irfan Pathan to Jonty Rhodes, DROPPED! Excellent effort by Binny but he should have held onto this one! Leg-cutter on a shortened length outside off, Rhodes reaches out and spoons it off the toe-end towards mid-off where Binny lunges forward. Alas, it pops out of his palms as his elbows thud into the turf.

19.3 Irfan Pathan to Jonty Rhodes, FOUR! Shaping into the pads on a full length, Rhodes rocks back on his swivel and manages to get some bat on it as it races very fine en route to the fence.

19.2 Irfan Pathan to Jonty Rhodes, slower full length delivery outside off stump, Rhodes plants his front foot across looking to sweep but this one cuts back in to ping him on the back pad.

19.1 Irfan Pathan to Jonty Rhodes, FOUR! WOW! Brings out his reverse-swat off a length around off stump and thumps it over short third man to perfection as he hangs deep. He's having some fun of his own alright!

Ntini steps out looking to whip it over mid-wicket but is bamboozled by the lack of pace on this one (even for a slower delivery)! The leg-stump takes a dent and there's the ninth wicket for the Indians!
