Match summary:
Melbourne Stars Women win by 4 runs
Meg Lanning 67*(49) | Annabel Sutherland 4/22 (4) Harmanpreet Kaur 37(39) | Sarah Coyte 2/32 (4)
The Renegades had it until very late in the run-chase, but they fatally faltered in the final stages of it. There was hope as long as they had Hayley Matthews was out there, but the tide turned the Stars' way as we headed towards the penultimate over. The two offies, Alice Capsey and Sasha Moloney, kept their nerves, and while Moloney erred in length initially, she recovered well, kept the batters to singles, and closed the game out brilliantly.
Kim Garth made early inroads for the Stars with the wicket of Emma de Broughe. That saw two international superstars in Harmanpreet Kaur and Tammy Beaumont come together. A productive partnership over 50 took place between the two of them as the duo steered the Renegades towards stability. The boundaries, though, were few and far in between - that turned out to be a decisive factor in the end.
Harmanpreet wasn't at her fluent best today, and in spite of being well set, never really got into second gear. She tried to keep the run-chase going after Beaumont's departure, but perished just as the Renegades took the Power Surge. The onus was on Hayley Matthews in guiding Melbourne's red outfit home. She had Georgia Wareham for company, and was successful in shortening the equation.
Annabel Sutherland, Stars' best bowler over the course of the day, was handed the ball to pull things back, and she did not disappoint. Back-to-back wickets from her in her final over brought the Stars back in it. The Renegades were always going to be under the pump going into the last two overs, and despite a fight, they ended up falling short.
The Stars prevail in the Melbourne derby! They made a real good match out of a total of 144, and claim the bragging rights in this one!
